The Show, 2010

I was in Dakar, Senegal in 2010 for FESMAN, and the hip hop shows were pure fire.  Some of the best of international hip hop and local Senegalese hip hop were on display all night every night. I took this photo during a Tigrim-Bi concert. Tigrim-Bi was a hardcore hip hop group among the first to collaborate on one of Nomadic Wax’s first projects all the way back in the late 90’s. The group also starred in our 2007 documentary film Democracy in Dakar. So we’ve been able to connect with them and see them every few years, someway somehow. The show in particular was the best show I ever saw them perform. With this photo, you can feel the intensity of hip hop in Senegal.

The photo was part of the Book cover image for Hip Hop Africa: New African Music in a Globalizing World, and this particular print was part of the “Comunidad, Communauté, Community” gallery exhibition at ReCreative Spaces in Washington, DC (July-September 2017). Signed.
